i thought i would dedicate this post to our sweet oakley. he's growing and changing so fast and i haven't really documented all the new things he's doing.
oakley has had such a sweet disposition since he was born, but lately, it is really becoming evident that this really is his personality. he is such a snuggly boy, loves giving kisses and "seezy hugs" (squeezy hugs), and is always wanting to love on someone (including beanie, our dog). every time he sees brian and me hugging, he says, "i want a o-tee sanwich!" it's something we started a while ago. when brian gets home from work, we greet each other with a hug and kiss and usually give a squeezy hug with oakley in the middle (hence, the oakley sandwich). it's a fun thing that oakley looks forward to, that affectionate little boy. i hope he never outgrows his love for affection toward his mommy and daddy.
since we moved into our new house, we have started giving oakley daily chores. it may seem a little crazy for him to have "chores" at two, but we really want to teach him responsibility and ownership, with a sense accomplishment in completing his list. every morning after breakfast, oakley is responsible for making his bed (with mommy's help, but he really does do most of it) and putting his clothes in the hamper (and on mondays/thursdays, bringing his hamper to the laundry area). he also is to take his dishes to the sink following each meal, feed beanie morning/night (with mommy/daddy's help), and clean up his toys at the end of the day. he is so proud of himself and usually will protest if we try to help him. he's becoming independent and it is so neat to see. part of me is so happy to see him growing into the boy he is, but part of me wants him to stay our little baby. i am proud of his eagerness to help me with my chores, too. when i vacuum, he is right behind me with his vacuum. he is upset if i start the laundry without him because he loves pouring the soap in and pushing the wet laundry into the dryer. he is eager to let beanie outside or inside when she's ready, and usually stands at the door, yelling, "BEANIE! NO BARK BEANIE!" when she's barking at the neighbor dogs. what a big boy we have.
oakley showed an interest in going potty on the big boy potty for a while, but has taken a step backward (not sure if he just got tired of it, or if it was because of the move). i was so excited when he was going on the potty and encouraged him, but tried not to push it. if i wanted to, i could probably get him to go "number 1" exclusively on the potty, but he doesn't show any signs (unfortunately) of readiness for "number 2". he could care less. i know he just turned two, but i'm ready for him to be out of diapers. we'll wait a few months and see what happens.
some new things oakley has accomplished in the past few months.
oakley can:
drink out of a regular cup
pedal his tricycle
swing on a big kid swing (even when given an "underdog")
walk up and down stairs without holding our hand
scale walls like a monkey (hence, his "monkey" nickname)
sleep in a big boy twin bed without getting up once at night
spell his name--well, half of it (usually is "O.A.K and some random letters or if i start with "oak" he'll end "L.E.Y" he's almost there!
count to 10 without prompts (working on counting to twenty!)
sing several songs including the B-I-B-L-E, Jesus loves me, and most of his abc's
recognize most shapes
draws circles and labels them as circles
recognizes the letters a, b, e, o, t
successfully call his aunt mel on mommy's phone
put his shirt, pants, and shoes on by himself (although, his shirt and pants are usually backwards. hey, they still serve their purpose backwards!)
cute things he has said recently:
when leaving to run errands: "bye! bye new house!"
when trying to spell his name: "o.a.k.t.p.q"
while eating dinner, he leaned over to me with kissy-lips and said, "i wanna eat your sugar, mommy!"
while playing with his puppets, he covered them with a blanket and said, "g'night puppets!...ok, time to get up, get some brefast, puppets!"
one morning, waking earlier than usual, he walked into our room and said, "goooodmoooorrrrning mommy!"
i've been out cold with a nasty virus the past few days. oakley came in to my room when i was resting and said, "get up now mommy??" i said, "oakley, i don't feel good. i'm going to stay in bed for a while." oakley said, "here mommy, have my bantet. make you feel better? lift up your head" and he put his blanket under my head.
we are so proud of the sweet, energetic, full-of-life little boy oakley is becoming and we can't wait to see what God has in store for his future. we love you, monkey!
